© OpenStreetMap · ODbL · Simplified map, not for navigation.

This chart shows the real buoyage of Kiel · Kiel Fjord (Germany), taken from OpenStreetMap on 2026-10-03. 4 marks are missing. IALA region A: coming in from the sea, red to port and green to starboard.

What the chart shows

The Kiel and Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde) chart has 9 marks: five lateral marks (three port-hand, two starboard-hand), two east cardinals and two special marks. The four empty spots are all laterals: starboard-hand 5 and 9, port-hand 8 and 14, the latter named “14/Reede” in OpenStreetMap. The special marks are called “Regatta” and “Sperr-G.”. No rock symbols.

Germany uses region A: in the direction of buoyage, that of a boat entering the Förde, red to port and green to starboard. The numbering confirms it: 5 and 9 are odd, so green; 8, 12 and 14 are even, so red. An east cardinal is recognised by two black cones base to base and a quick-flashing light in groups of three. Special marks are yellow; their meaning is read from the chart.

According to Wikipedia, the fjord runs about 17 km from Kiel Bay to the Hörn in the city centre, narrowing to about 1 km at the Friedrichsorter Enge. The Kiel Canal opens into it at Holtenau.
